DUI Suspect Arrested After Brief Pursuit, Nearly Colliding With Ambulance In Santa Clarita

A DUI suspect was arrested on multiple felonies Sunday after he nearly collided with an ambulance before leading deputies on a brief pursuit in Santa Clarita.

Around 9:45 p.m. Sunday, deputies responded to a drunk driver call for service located at Needham Ranch Parkway and Sierra Highway in Newhall, said Deputy Candice Gonzales, a spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“It was reported a Medical Response vehicle was almost hit by a reckless driver inside a black Chevy,” Gonzales said.

When deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop of the driver, a brief pursuit ensued, according to Gonzales.

“During the high risk felony traffic stop, the driver became uncooperative and refused to follow deputies verbal commands,” Gonzales said.

After deputies were able to detain the driver for further investigation, they observed an open alcoholic beverage inside the vehicle and a strong odor of alcohol emitting from the driver, according to Sheriff’s officials.

As deputies attempted to conduct field sobriety tests, the suspect continued to remain uncooperative and argumentative.

Hector Lopez, 38, from Van Nuys, was arrested for DUI, evading a police officer, both felonies and driving on a suspended license, a misdemeanor, Gonzales added.

Lopez was arrested and transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station jail with bail set at $0, according to arrest records.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
