A mother of six who recently gave birth to a pair of daughters was identified by friends of the family as the victim in a fatal crash on Golden Valley Road Friday night that is suspected to have been caused by a drunk driver.
Katie Evans, 37, was returning home after visiting her twin daughters, who had recently been born prematurely at the UCLA Intensive Care Unit, when a 21-year-old female driver, who sheriff’s officials believe was driving while impaired, crashed into her. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Katie was at UCLA every day, holding her baby girls,” said an individual close to the Evans family.

The twins had been born prematurely at 25 weeks, and both had weighed only 1.5 pounds. Since their birth on August 13, Evans had been by their side at the UCLA ICU.

Evans leaves behind her husband and six children: four boys, ages 12,11,9 and two, as well as two twin girls who were recently born.
“This tragic event seems to be another case of driving under the influence that is plaguing our community in Santa Clarita,” said Steve Lindberg, community leader and friend of the Evans family. “How many more innocent lives need to be senselessly lost before adults and teenagers in this community wake up to the fact that their actions are not only criminal, but fatal?”
“The Evans family, like so many others before them, will now be changed forever,” continued Lindberg. “These children will grow up without the nurture and tender loving care of their angel mother.”
Investigators suspect alcohol may have contributed to the fatal car crash on Golden Valley Road late Friday night, officials with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said.
“There were some open containers in the primary person’s vehicle,” said Lt. Rob Hahnlein with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, confirming that they held alcoholic beverages.
Emergency responders arrived to a three car wreck at the Golden Valley Road bridge over Soledad Canyon Road at approximately 11:50 p.m., Los Angeles County Fire officials said.
The third driver only suffered minor injuries and did not require a transport. The driver officials believe is responsible was able to exit her vehicle before paramedics arrived.
“She was found sitting at the curb when we got there,” Hahnlein said. “She’s at the hospital getting checked out.”
The woman who investigators suspect was behind the wheel of the car in which they found the containers in is receiving care for her injuries at Henry Mayo Newhall hospital.
“It just looks like a person traveling south on Golden Valley accidentally hit the right curb heading into traffic coming northbound, striking oncoming traffic,” Hahnlein said.
The lieutenant confirmed the southbound driver’s car is the one investigators found the alcoholic beverage containers in.
Officials with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s station have not placed the woman in custody as of noon Saturday because she is still undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The collision is still being investigated by traffic detectives.
“Too many Santa Clarita families have been tragically impacted because of drunk driving,” shared Bob Sharits, The Way Out Recovery SCV’s Program Director . “Katie Evans death should be a wakeup call for our valley.”

If the family has pets , I hope I can help them with grooming.
Awful beyond words. We should have even more severe punishment to discourage drinking and driving. Personally, I no longer go out after 10:00 PM on weekend nights. There are just too many bad drivers out there. I’m not a religious person but I certainly hope the best for her husband, children, and the others in their family.
Too bad there are not adequate services for NICU babies in the SCV.
I would like to help you with your new born twins, I have experience with twins and have had a child care for many years in my home, but no longer kept my license up. But I would like to help in any way.
