Gary Hunt, 53, was shot multiple times and his son, Joshua Hunt, 23, sustained a single gunshot wound to the head, said Lt. Steve Jauch with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.
Both parties were transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital and pronounced dead.
Jauch noted that homicide detectives are “on the surface” of considering this case a murder-suicide and will “ride the brakes” on labelling it as such until an autopsy is conducted.
The autopsy for both parties have not been scheduled by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner as of Tuesday afternoon, said Jauch.
Jauch said that homicide detectives interviewed the woman who was home at the time of the shooting, “she’s obviously grieving the loss of her husband and son.”
Jauch noted that it was “inappropriate to share” what the woman told detectives.
Homicide detectives have learned there was a dispute between both men prior to the gunshots, according to a news release.
One handgun was recovered from scene on Sunday and several shell casings were found inside the home, Jauch said.
Neighbors said that four people lived in the Valencia home where the shooting occurred and screams and gunshots were heard.
“My whole backyard was echoing and we could hear screaming,” said Hayden Acosta.
The investigation is ongoing and there is no additional information available at this time.
