Yearly, KHTS Radio publishes an interactive map listing registered sex offenders to help our community stay informed.
Whether you’re a new transplant to a Santa Clarita community looking to know your neighbors or a cautious parent prepping a tick-or-treating route, KHTS has compiled a list of locally registered sex offenders to keep our community informed.
The list only includes sex offender registrants who have their addresses listed with the State of California Department of Justice – Megan’s Law database.
Megan’s Law is named after seven-year-old Megan Kanka, who was raped and murdered by a known child molester who had moved across the street from the family without their knowledge.
In the wake of that tragedy, the Kankas sought to have local communities warned about sex offenders in the area. All states in the U.S. now have some form of Megan’s Law.
Megan’s Law also authorizes local law enforcement agencies to notify the public about sex offender registrants found to be posing a risk to public safety.
A risk assessment score is not available for all offenders, as risk assessment did not start in California until 2006. A risk assessment scale is available here.
Ed. Note: Any person who uses information disclosed on the Megan’s Law website to commit a misdemeanor is, in addition to any other punishment for that misdemeanor, subject to a fine of not less than $10,000 and not more than $50,000. Any person who uses information disclosed on the Megan’s Law website to commit a felony shall, in addition to any other punishment for that felony, be punished by a five-year term of imprisonment. (Pen. Code, § 290.46, subd. (h).)
