A Stevenson Ranch resident was shocked Wednesday when he walked out his front door to find that his rare 2019 ZR1 Chevrolet Corvette had been stolen overnight.
Instead of his burnished Sebring Orange coupe tucked safely under its cover, the man found only shattered glass and the torn car cover discarded in a neighbor’s yard.
As of Wednesday morning, the vehicle remains missing, according to Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
“Deputies took a stolen vehicle report and units in the field were advised of the vehicle description. As of this time, the car remains outstanding,” Miller said.
The owner, after reviewing camera footage and speaking with neighbors, believes the theft occurred around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. Nearby residents reported hearing an alarm but assumed it had gone off by accident.
Suspicious activity had also been observed in the days leading up to the theft. According to the owner’s daughter, a silver car, possibly a Honda or Toyota, had been seen cruising the neighborhood repeatedly, then leaving the area when approached.
The stolen vehicle is far from ordinary. It is number 202 off the production line of the 2019 ZR1 — the final front-engine Corvette model ever built. Only 2,953 ZR1s were produced in total, making it one of the rarest and most sought-after Corvettes in recent history.
This particular car’s color and body combination — a Sebring Orange coupe — makes it even rarer. Only 614 ZR1s were built in this exact configuration, according to General Motors production data.
While most ZR1s currently resell for between $144,000 and $389,000, according to Kelley Blue Book and collector listings, early-production ZR1s have fetched even higher figures at auction.
In 2018, the first retail 2019 ZR1 (VIN #001) was auctioned for $925,000 at Barrett-Jackson, with proceeds donated to charity. A pair of early VIN Corvettes, including an early-production ZR1, was later sold as a lot for $2.325 million, according to Motor Authority.
Although the stolen vehicle is production number 202 — not among the very first few — its condition, rarity, and configuration make it highly valuable on the collector market.
This isn’t the first time a ZR1 has been the target of auto theft. In September 2024, one of just three ZR1 convertibles in Canada was stolen. It was later found stripped and destroyed, with only part of the vehicle recovered.
Anyone with information about the Stevenson Ranch theft is urged to call the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station at (661) 260-4000. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
