“It appears these suspects have keyed in on RV’s because they feel that they will go unnoticed because of the large area that the trailers are stored in,” said Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Burglary Team Sergeant Chris Maurizi.

Even though the trailers are locked, the thieves have been gaining entry by breaking the locks and windows.
“They are looking for anything of value that they can turn around and sell quickly,” Maurizi said, adding that in one recent case, a firearm was reported stolen from a motorhome.

The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station urges the public not to leave valuables in their stored RV, including cash, jewelry and electronics.

In addition to items of monetary value, it is also important to remove any personal information to avoid being a victim of identity theft. Remove any paperwork that may include a full name, date of birth, address or social security number.

The Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station would like to remind residents to check on a stored RV regularly. Stop by the storage facility periodically, even if there is a security system in place. Go inside and inspect the vehicle for missing items, and inspect the outside for signs of forced entry.

If you are a victim of theft or vandalism, contact the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

If the stolen property is valued at less than $950, or the vandalism damage is valued under $400, you also have the option of reporting the crime online by visiting the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s website and selecting the link ‘File an Online Police Report.’

Anyone with information on the break-ins is asked to contact the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station at (661) 255-1121.
