A Santa Clarita bride was sentenced to five years in jail for a wedding fraud scheme she concocted to rip off The Knot website — not once, but twice, officials said Monday.
Vermyttya Miller, 37, of Santa Clarita, was ordered to pay $22,500 in restitution after pleading no contest to one count of felony insurance fraud, according to the California Department of Insurance.
In October 2016, Miller booked a wedding reception through The Knot website for the Galleria Ballroom in Glendale, which came with a $10,000 event cancellation/postponement insurance policy, according to officials.
Soon after booking the reception, Miller claimed she tripped on her wedding dress and was injured so severely that she had to cancel the wedding reception. She then filed an insurance claim under the $10,000 policy.
To support her cancellation claim, Miller provided medical reports documenting her injuries. On Oct. 31, 2016, the insurer delivered a $10,000 check to Miller, according to officials.
Then Miller e-mailed The Knot’s insurer on Dec. 4, 2016 to report her $10,000 check was stolen and provided a copy of a police report she allegedly filed with the Vallejo Police Department in Northern California, according to the insurance commission.
Miller also provided the insurer with investigative details she said the Vallejo Police Department reported to her, according to the department.
Evidence revealed Miller had actually doctored a previously submitted police report for a different incident that occurred years earlier.
“Miller’s trail of fraudulent claims led straight to a five-year jail sentence after department detectives unraveled her scheme,” said Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara. “Insurance fraud is a felony with serious penalties and consequences. We are committed to uncovering fraud and working with prosecutors to bring criminals to justice.”
The insurer, Tokio Marine, referred the claim to the Department of Insurance for investigation. Detectives uncovered evidence that Miller falsified the medical reports of her injury, which she used to file the original claim.
Detectives also found Miller doctored the Vallejo Police report she used to substantiate her claim that the $10,000 check was stolen, according to investigators.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office prosecuted the case and Miller pleaded no contest to one count of felony insurance fraud. She was ordered to pay restitution for the $10,000 she received and an additional $12,500 for investigative costs.
Miller was remanded to the custody of the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, where she is serving her five-year sentence.

Why is it that this woman is in jail for 10,000 and there is a woman running around Santa Clarita who has stolen over 80,000 from Girl Scouts and Cancer centers, like she has done nothing WRONG!
Probably had a secret stash of thin mints to bribe her way out.
The obvious; one woman is black and sentenced to 5 years in jail and ordered to pay $22,500 in restitution. The other woman is white and free to roam Awesometown. POC, are always held to a higher standard, why are you shocked? This is our reality daily.
The delicate black woman had a long history of fraud! Please stop playing the race card to excuse chronic horrible behavior! Why aren’t other people of color, minority’s (Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Chinese ,Icelandic, etc.) constantly causing trouble in a civilized society? All have free, taxpayer paid school from K-12! Why do some cultures behave & others continue to constantly cause trouble for society & themselves??!!
You do realize historically and contemporaneously, VICTIMS of crime are people of color and not at the hands of other POC. Carry on with your outdated and veiled racist perceptions though; seems to help you thrive in your perfect world.
EVERYONE ALSO REALIZES YOUR A MORON …….. STAR P.
My mistake .You’re not your. I forgot Liberals like to point out grammer as well as their many degrees from free college while collecting unemployment. It was a talk text error
Oh Sarah, you poor pathetic creature, lamenting that the world has changed and that changing demographics frighten your “majority” status. Free college, please!! The recent college scandal revealed those who paid, cheated and lied to get their spoiled and entitled children into our nation’s finest universities, were in fact wealthy, white and privileged. Meanwhile, those who work and try to fairly earn a spot at the same universities are still disproportionately POC. I know you have trouble understanding facts and prefer to label people Liberal as if it’s a pejorative, but I will not stay silent to comfort your ignorance.
JoJo, That was random “Icelandic” but true lol . We are law abiding citizens
How could you be law abiding? You’re a victim, you’re a person of color (very, very white)! That allows you to break the law & claim discrimination! Please get with it, victim, and put your hand out & law suits pending!!
The black woman was sentenced because it was insurance fraud. The white woman ripped off the Girl Scouts organization. If she had robbed a bank she would be in jail for a long long time. Has nothing to due with race.
Why is the PWOC allowed to roam only in Valencia (so-called “awesometown”)?
One is still being investigated and the other is not. The woman who “allegedly” stole from the Girl Scouts will have her day in court, and if convicted will more than likely have to do time and pay restitution. Both involve money which make both crimes Federal, and the Federal courts do not usually play games.
