The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station launched its 16th annual toy drive last week at Frontier Toyota in collaboration with KHTS Radio.

For the 16th year, the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station is organizing a holiday toy drive to benefit less fortunate residents of the Santa Clarita Valley, said Captain Robert Lewis.

“The toy drive is really, over the course of its 16 years, means to Santa Clarita that we give back,” Lewis said. “We’re here to support the community as much as possible.”

Lt. Joseph Fender, a Castaic resident who recently transferred from Antelope Valley to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, said the event gives deputies the opportunity to connect with the community.

“It’s great anytime the Sheriff’s Department can come out and partner with the community and give back, and show the residents that we’re more than just a badge, we’re more than just a tan shirt and a green pair of pants,” Fender said. “We’re fathers and mothers, husbands and wives. We’re part of the community, regardless of what uniform we wear.”

Several local businesses, including KHTS, are participating in the program as toy drop-off locations.

“It’s hard to believe KHTS and the Sheriff’s have been doing this for 16 years,” said Carl Goldman, owner of KHTS Radio. “The Sheriff’s Toy Drive is important to us because all the toys stay in our valley for those who need a hand up during Christmas. Thanks to all the schools, music teachers and parents for participating, our friends at Frontier Toyota for hosting and Robin Strickland for coordinating.”

The kick-off event was hosted by one of those partners, Frontier Toyota, whose general manager, Bob Corson, spoke about the importance of community during the holidays, and especially in Santa Clarita after the Saugus High shooting.

“Community is everything. It’s all about community,” Corson said. “It’s been a tough year for us, but everyone’s pulling together. God bless Santa Clarita. We’re proud to be a part of this community.”

During the event, a moment of silence was observed in remembrance of the victims and those affected by the Saugus High shooting.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
