Santa Clarita Pursuit Suspect Arrested After Reaching Speeds Of Over 100 MPH

A Santa Clarita pursuit suspect was arrested Friday for driving at speeds of over 100 miles per hour in a Toyota Prius before coming to a crash ending, officials said.

At about 2:30 a.m. Friday, California Highway Patrol officers observed a motorist traveling at a high rate of speed on the southbound 5 Freeway near Lyons Avenue, said Officer Josh Greengard, spokesperson for the CHP Newhall Area Office.

“He was observed speeding, confirmed on radar at 102 (miles per hour),” Greengard said.

Officers initiated an enforcement stop, but the suspect allegedly failed to yield to officers and led them on a pursuit, according to Greengard.

The suspect led law enforcement from the 5 Freeway to The Old Road, and then traveled down McBean Parkway and other residential streets in the City of Santa Clarita, according to CHP officials.

The Santa Clarita pursuit ended in a crash near Arroyo Park Drive and Regents Park Circle in Valencia, according to Greengard.

Elijah Mitchell, 19, of Northridge, was arrested for allegedly evading a peace officer with disregard for safety, according to arrest logs.

Mitchell is being held at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station jail in lieu of $75,000 bail.
