Santa Clarita representatives on the local, state and national levels commented on the Monterey Park Shooting on Saturday.
Representatives for Santa Clarita gave their condolences and offered solutions in the aftermath of a mass shooting at a ballroom dance studio that left 11 dead and 10 others wounded in Monterey Park, a city east of Los Angeles, Saturday night.
The gunman in the shooting has been identified as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a standoff with law enforcement.
Representative Mike Garcia commented on behalf of himself and his wife through Twitter.
“Rebecca and I are praying for the victims and their families of this senseless and evil act,” Garcia said.
Scott Wilk, who represents Santa Clarita in the California State Senate, tweeted out resources for those struggling with mental health issues.
“My prayers go out to his family & loved ones who are grieving during this time,” Wilk said. “If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available. The ‘988’ lifeline is free to call or text – available 24/7 for those suffering from a mental health crisis.”
Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger spoke on the seriousness of the incident on Sunday.
“No words can bring comfort to the loved ones impacted by last night’s #MontereyPark mass shooting,” Barger tweeted. “@CountyofLA is in mourning.”
Newly elected California State Assemblymember Pilar Schiavo tweeted her own comments Sunday.
“Horrified to wake up to the news of the shooting in Monterey Park,” Schiavo said. “My heart goes out to the families grieving, to another community traumatized by gun violence, to those who started their day in celebration of the Lunar New Year only to end in the worst tragedy. Enough.”
Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon spoke about the impact of the shooting on Lunar New Year celebrations.
“The mass shooting that occurred overnight in Monterey Park is unspeakable,” Gascon tweeted. “No community should have to experience a horrific tragedy like this—especially on a day meant for festivity and joy. We stand with the Monterey Park Community and everyone involved.”
Governor Gavin Newsom visited Monterey Park Sunday to meet with community leaders in the aftermath of the incident.
“The strength of this community is incredible,” Newsom said. “No other country in the world is terrorized by this constant stream of gun violence. We need real gun reform at a national level.”
