Suspect Arrested For Assault With Deadly Weapon On Peace Officer After 14 Freeway Pursuit

A Santa Clarita 14 Freeway pursuit suspect is facing multiple felonies, including assault on a peace officer, after leading multiple law enforcement agencies on a chase Wednesday, officials said.

On Wednesday around 5:19 p.m., Palmdale deputies conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle in the area of 20th Street East and Palmdale Boulevard, said Deputy Ronald Sneed, a spokesperson with the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station.

“During the traffic stop, the suspect began making furtive movements and reaching underneath his seat, leading deputy personnel to believe the suspect was reaching for a weapon,” Sneed said.

Deputies opened the suspect’s driver side door and ordered the suspect to exit his vehicle.

“The suspect shifted his vehicle into drive and began to drive away from the traffic stop,” Sneed said. “The suspect pushed deputy personnel away from his vehicle and slammed the driver’s side door on the deputy’s shoulder.”

The suspect then fled the traffic stop in his vehicle.

Deputies pursued the suspect throughout the streets of Palmdale and southbound on Sierra Highway toward Acton, according to Sheriff’s officials.

At Sierra Highway and Soledad Canyon, the suspect drove onto the southbound 14 Freeway on-ramp and conducted a U-turn on the freeway, Sneed said.

“The suspect made an additional U-turn and began to travel in the correct direction, southbound on the freeway,” Sneed said.

The California Highway Patrol engaged and took over the pursuit on the freeway.

Once the pursuit was on the 14 Freeway, news media helicopters captured the suspect allegedly tossing a handgun onto the freeway, according to Sheriff’s officials.

“Several citizens called to report the location of the handgun,” Sneed said.

The suspect exited the 14 Freeway on Soledad Canyon Road, where CHP Newhall officers pursued the driver for a short time, said Officer Josh Greengard, a spokesperson for the Newhall Area Office.

The pursuit then re-entered the northbound 14 Freeway, and Palmdale CHP officers conducted a felony traffic stop of the suspect’s vehicle on the off-ramp of Pearblossom Highway, according to officials.

Palmdale units took the suspect into custody without further incident.

With the assistance of the California Highway Patrol, the northbound 14 Freeway traffic was stopped.

“Deputies searched the freeway and located a Glock, .45 caliber handgun, which was broken into pieces. A Glock, 10-round, loaded magazine was also found inside the suspect’s vehicle,” Sneed said.

Deputies involved in the initial traffic stop reported minor injuries and were treated at a local hospital.

The suspect, Logan Spencer, 24, from Palmdale, was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, felony evading and possession of a loaded firearm to commit a felony.

Spencer was booked and given $75,000 bail, Sneed said.
