Rashad Hampton, 26, of Newhall, posted $35,000 bail a little more than 24 hours after mid-day traffic on the east side of the Santa Clarita Valley was brought to a halt, when a bus driver reported a gun tucked into Hampton’s waistband.

Deputies received a report from the driver that a passenger appeared to be passed out on the bus and in possession of a weapon, shortly before 1 p.m.

The driver pulled the bus over on Sierra Highway, just south of Soledad Canyon Road, and emergency officials evacuated the bus.

Deputies did not attempt to board the bus once it was evacuated, due to the fact that they suspected he was armed with a loaded gun and intoxicated. The Sheriff’s Department’s Special Enforcement Bureau Team, a task force that is essentially LASD’s SWAT Team.

Hampton surrendered to deputies without incident shortly before 3 p.m., according to Sheriff’s Station officials.

He was arrested at 2:57 p.m., and booked at the station at 4:30 p.m. Deputies charged Hampton with the following felonies: carrying a concealed firearm upon person; carrying a concealed firearm, does not have permission to possess; carrying a loaded concealed firearm, unregistered; carrying a loaded firearm in a public place; carrying a loaded firearm in a public place, not in lawful possession; and carrying a loaded firearm in a public place, not the registered owner. He was also charged with two misdemeanors: public intoxication and a reasonable cause arrest for receiving stolen property.

The District Attorney’s Office has 30 days to determine which of those charges it will prosecute because Hampton made bail.

The D.A.’s Office did not yet have a criminal complaint for Hampton as of Thursday.
