Wine Bottle-Wielding Suspect Arrested After Attempting To Hit Store Employee

A suspect was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly swinging a wine bottle at a store employee when being asked to leave a Canyon Country business.

On Wednesday at approximately 2 a.m. deputies responded to a call of a man holding two wine bottles, arguing with employees on the 20600 block of Soledad Canyon Road in Canyon Country, said Deputy Natalie Arriaga, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

Upon arrival, deputies detained a male adult matching the description of the suspect, later positively identified as the suspect,” added Arriaga.

During the time of investigation, deputies learned the suspect allegedly entered the business and jumped over the front counter when an employee then told the man that he was not welcome there, Arriaga added.

The suspect refused to comply and grabbed two wine bottles.  The employee attempted to retrieve the bottles from the suspect’s hands, during which the suspect swung one of the bottles towards the employee’s head,” Arriaga said.

No major injuries were reported, according to Arriaga.

The suspect was ultimately arrested for felony assault with a deadly weapon, Arriaga said.

Ruben Lahn, 31, was booked into the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and as of Thursday morning remains in custody.

  1. That should be assault with a deadly weapon. It’s not like in the movies- you hit someone over the head with a wine or liquor bottle and it will cause serious injury or death.

  2. Was the wine red, white or sparkling? Wino swill? or a robust California Cabernet Sauvignon? You can tell a lot about someone based on the bottle they use as a weapon. In this case, I bet Thunderbird.
