A woman was arrested on DUI charges Tuesday evening after reportedly falling asleep behind the wheel due to taking a prescription medication that “can cause drowsiness,” according to officials.
At around 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station received a call reporting a possible drunk driver along Bouquet Canyon Road.
“The caller reported the driver was ‘nodding off’ at a stoplight and also hit the center median several times,” reads a Facebook post from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
After deputies caught up to the driver, they conducted a traffic stop and administered field sobriety tests, according to officials.
“The driver performed poorly,” the post reads.
The woman was reportedly unable to keep her balance, and “missed all placements of the finger” during a finger-to-nose test, according to officials.
However, a preliminary blood alcohol concentration test came back at 0 percent, meaning no alcohol was present in her system.
“It turns out the driver had taken a prescription medication that can cause drowsiness,” the post reads.
Deputies arrested the woman on DUI charges. She was transported to and booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
“Please be mindful of medications and take warnings seriously on the labels,” the post reads. “Getting behind the wheel of a car when you’re under the influence of drugs, which includes prescriptions, can be just as deadly as getting behind the wheel of a car after consuming alcohol.”
