In October 1998, a University of Wyoming student, Matthew Shepard, was beaten and left tied to a fence to die in Laramie, Wyoming.

The murder of Shepard, who was targeted because he was gay, sparked a nationwide conversation about the lack of hate crime legislation in the United States and Wyoming.

After Shepard’s murder, members of The Tectonic Theater Movement traveled to Laramie to gather information about the town, its residents and the effect Shepard’s kidnapping and death had on them.

The group then made a collection of real words spoken by those residents and edited them together for “a truly powerful piece of theatre,” according to SCVi officials.

In October of this year, two decades after his murder, Matthew Shepard was laid to rest and interred in the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

Due to the graphic nature of the incident, as well as the content and strong hate speech, it is suggested that children under the age of 13 do not attend the performance, according to officials.

The show is scheduled for three different nights, from Nov. 8 to Nov. 10, starting at 7 p.m.

SCVi is located at 28060 Hasley Canyon Road in Castaic.
