The Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) recently recognized Heather Drew, the Leona Cox Community School principal, as their Administrator of the Year, officials said Wednesday.
Drew has been recognized as Administrator of the Year at an elementary school by the Santa Clarita Charter of the ACSA.
“The award represents a celebration of leadership in Santa Clarita schools, helping admins do the best they can,” said Kim Tredick, president of the Santa Clarita charter of ACSA.
Founded in 1971, the ACSA is an advocacy group representing thousands of California educators and public school students.
Drew was recognized for her leadership in the Sulphur Springs Union School District.
“This is only my third year as principal, so it meant a lot to be recognized by my peers,” Drew said. “You’re only as good as your team, and the staff here is a team. They go above and beyond and are very allowing of me to take the reins.”
Other administrators from Santa Clarita were also awarded for their work in the school districts, including Sulphur Springs Superintendent Catherine Kawaguchi earning the Marcus Foster Memorial Award.
The Marcus Foster Memorial Award is both a regional- and state-level award acknowledging “administrator excellence,” according to ACSA officials.
“The award is focused on change… We have been focused on making a change for the positive in the social-emotional aspect of students, to create success and make kids feel safe,” Drew said. “With receiving the award, it highlighted that we are doing our part.”
Administrators from Newhall School, William S. Hart Union High School, Castaic Union School, and Sulphur Springs School Districts are set to be submitted for recognition on the state level by Region 15 ACSA.
