Several schools in the Sulphur Springs Union School District are set to reopen Monday after a week-long closure due to smoke damage sustained during the Tick Fire.
The school days missed due to the closure would not be made up, and schools would follow the rest of the school calendar as planned, according to an announcement on the district website.
The Tick Fire and Old Fire and resulting smoke two weeks ago caused unsafe conditions inside the classrooms and facilities, according to Dr. Cathrine Kawaguchi, district superintendent.

Kawaguchi stated at the time that a cleaning company would be brought in to ensure that the schools and surrounding facilities were safe for students and faculty.
“It’s a matter of health and safety,” Kawaguchi said.
Psychologists are set to be available on campus to students in the Sulphur Springs School District once each school opens back up.
