A self-imposed “soft lockdown” was placed on Mitchell Community Elementary School in Canyon Country Thursday morning, and has been lifted, officials said.
Around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, there was a report of a disturbance in the surrounding neighborhood near Goodvale Road, according to Shirley Miller, a spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
“The Sheriff’s did not put the school on a soft lockdown,” said Miller. “The soft lockdown was put in place by school officials.”
As of Thursday morning, the elementary school is no longer on lockdown, according to Sulphur Springs Union School District Superintendent Dr. Catherine Kawaguchi.
“It was all out of precaution,” Kawaguchi said. “There was no incident on campus. It was in the surrounding neighborhood.”
Deputies responded to the report of a disturbance in relation to a person with mental illness near the school, Miller said.
