“You used to think of summer school as punitive, like ‘I did something really wrong,’” said Dawn Oliver, Tutor Doctor’s director of education. “But for a lot of kids that’s not the case anymore. There are actually opportunities for doing things in the summer to get ahead and to fill in the gaps.”
By dedicating a portion of the summer to education, Santa Clarita parents can take a proactive approach to their child’s upcoming school year rather than being reactive after problems begin to occur, according to Oliver.

“This is a great time to set it up so that we’re all set to go in whatever subject it is the child might need a boost in,” she said, “or maybe getting ready to make that transition from junior high to high school or from high school on to college.”
A proactive approach can also boost self esteem and help students feel more confident going into the fall with new classes or at a new school, owner Steve Grill added.
In addition to the benefits of early preparation, Grill also believes the extra brain stimulation will help students perform better when they do return to school.

“Summer is a really critical time to keep the kids thinking about their education,” he said. “If an athlete stops training you expect to see a lag in performance over a period of time, and it’s the same with students. If they don’t exercise their brain they’re going to have a lag in performance.”
Grill advises parents to plan trips to one of Santa Clarita’s libraries and pick up workbooks that could be fun for younger children in addition to the beach and pool trips typical of summer.
“Give them incentives,” he said, referring to rewards like stickers for younger children or gift cards for older students. “Give them things that reward them for helping them work in the summer and doing that extra effort.”
