SCSBOA is considered the highest-level competition for high school marching bands, and bands who participate have to qualify through several other competitions throughout the year, according to officials.
“The Hart Regiment’s gold medal in Division 4A was the school’s 14th SCSBOA championship,” said Dave Caldwell, a spokesperson for the Hart District. “Plus, this year is the second year in a row three different Hart School District bands were medalists.”
The five district schools that participated over the weekend of Nov. 17-18 were Valencia High School, West Ranch High School, Golden Valley High School, Hart High School and Canyon High School.
The competing bands were divided into categories based off of the number of musicians in the band.
The 5A category, which consists of 120-149 musicians, was held at Martin Luther King High School in Riverside, where West Ranch High School placed second with the Silver Medal High Auxiliary Award.
The 4A category, which consists of 90-119 musicians, was held at Downey High School in Downey, and Hart High School took first place with the Gold Medal High Auxiliary Award.
Also in the 4A category, Golden Valley High School received 11th place, according to district officials.
The 3A category, which consists of 70-89 musicians, was held at Colony High School in Ontario, during which Valencia High School took home the second place silver medal.
The 2A category, which consists of 50-69 musicians, was held at Martin Luther King High School in Riverside, and Canyon High School took eighth place.
