Hart High School Class Of 2020 Graduates In Drive-Thru Ceremony

The William S. Hart High School class of 2020 participated in a drive-thru graduation ceremony at Central Park on Tuesday morning.

More than 450 of the class’s 528 graduating seniors participated in the procession, which gave graduates and their families alike an opportunity for a taste of the traditional graduation experience.

“It was so great for our kids and for our families to have something that they could look forward to,” said Hart High School principal Jason d’Autremont. “We’ve done our drive-thru senior awards, but to have an actual ceremony where they get a diploma cover and they’re in a cap and gown was really special, it was just a fantastic day all around.”

As each senior approached the stage, they exited their car where they had a photo opportunity in front of a large banner before they took the stage to pick up their diploma and for another photo as they were cheered on by their family from the car.

After exiting the stage, the graduates were greeted by another round of applause and celebration from members of the faculty in attendance.

“Our faculty did an amazing job coming every hour at a time, we had groups of ten that came out, made signs, cheered them on, and it really made them feel special,” d’Autremont said. “It was kind of that last goodbye to a lot of our seniors, so it was great to have them out here supporting our seniors as well.”

The possibility of an in-person graduation experience had been uncertain until several weeks ago, when Los Angeles County officials gave the go-ahead for drive-thru events.

“A lot of credit goes to the people that were planning this and helping set everything up,” d’Autremont said. “All the way from the folks at the district office to our administrative team, to a lot of our parent group that came out, set everything up and made it look tremendous today.”

The graduates now-former principal left the class of 2020 with a final piece of advice as they go forward into their lives after high school.

“Use this year and build off it, don’t think it was a lost semester or a lost year as a senior, it’s a year that no other senior probably has ever had in their lifetime and they should be the ones proud of that,” d’Autremont said. “And as a Hart graduate, continue to be alive with pride, use this year as a resiliency to do bigger and better things with their lives, so congratulations!”

The school is also holding a virtual graduation Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m., and is set to be available to stream live on YouTube here.
