The Hart District Trail Crew is a program within the William S. Hart Union High School District that provides students with a two-week paid summer work experience in trail building and maintenance.
The program, which partners with the U.S. Forest Service and the city of Santa Clarita, aims to prepare students for the workforce by giving them real-world job experience, including the interview process and on-the-job training.
The program prepares students for the workforce by connecting them with trained supervisors in the wilderness and teaching valuable trail-building skills that can transfer into other professions, such as firefighting and ranger service.
This year’s 2025 Summer Trail Crew saw 28 U.S. Forest Service workers selected from more than 160 applicants, and represents all abilities and most district school sites.
The Hart District Trail Crew’s efforts have resulted in a new hiking trail segment being aligned and installed in Agua Dulce, along with 1.7 miles of complete restoration within the Bobcat Fire impact area along the Pacific Crest Trail at Cloudburst Summit above La Canada.
The 2024 Summer Hart Trails Team resulted in a new city trail segment being installed, an additional 1.5 miles maintained in East Walker Ranch and Aliento Open Spaces, and 1.5 miles of complete corridor restoration along the Pacific Crest Trail at Three Points above Mt Wilson.
