Valencia High JROTC Places Third In National Academic Competition

The Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) based out of Valencia High School recently took third place in a national academic competition, officials said Tuesday.

The CA-782 team competed in the AFJROTC Academic Bowl Championship in Washington, D.C. They were accompanied by Sgt Legier, who served as their coach, according to Col. Christopher Bricker, the senior aerospace science instructor for the program.

Around 240 teams from around the world competed during the school year to earn a place at the nationals in 2019, but only 16 made it, one of which was Valencia High School.

The Valencia team included Cadets Daniel Kim, Joshua Yoon, Natalie Dekker and Joel Sojan. They were all either sophomores or juniors, as no seniors or freshmen were allowed to participate.

“They worked extremely hard throughout the year, both in ROTC and on their own time. It’s going to benefit them in their preparation for college, and really for life,” Bricker said. “They get a lot out of it, and they put in a lot of work to do so.”

The team competed in two preliminary rounds, during which they were tested on their knowledge of a broad range of subjects, including the JROTC curriculum, English, math, science and current events.

In their participation, students learn to value citizenship, academic opportunity and college opportunities, according to officials.

A primary goal of the JROTC Academic Bowl is to prepare students for college entry exams, like the ACT or SAT, officials said.

The National Academic Bowl Competition is sponsored by the U.S. Air Force JROTC, and conducted by the College Options Foundation.
