Called the Energy Upgrade California Home Upgrade Rebate Program, homeowners can receive thousands of dollars back when they make “whole house” energy upgrades, according to Samantha Robinson of The Energy Network.

“You have a contractor come in and they assess what’s going to help you save the most on your utility bills,” she said, “but more importantly what’s going to keep you more comfortable in your house.”

Potential upgrades a contractor may notice include increasing attic insulation, sealing off drafts around windows, replacing windows with high-efficiency ones and improving air ducts.

“Often air ducts can also be a big factor,” Robinson said. “If you’ve got a furnace and maybe some rooms aren’t getting as warm as they should be, it may be because air ducts through your house aren’t set up appropriately, so the warm air isn’t reaching you, and you’re of course cold in the end.”

A homeowner in Canyon Country who recently replaced his air conditioning system through the rebate program saved about 70 percent of his energy use over the summer, according to Robinson.

“Only a 12 year old house, replacing their AC with a much more energy efficient unit let them save 70 percent of their energy use,” she said. “They said that it was like going from a go-kart AC unit to a luxury vehicle.”

Rebates are available to homeowners that work with the program’s participating contractors, who are licensed, insured and have energy efficiency training.

The program’s contractors are trained to take a comprehensive approach to home upgrades and won’t simply try to sell homeowners the newest, biggest products.

“Their approach is going to be to look at your house, how it’s working now and then help you identify what steps will make you more comfortable and help you save energy at home,” Robinson said.
