A church in Santa Clarita has scheduled a conference this week to help build strong marriages and partnerships as bedrocks of family living.

On Wednesday, Nov. 6 and Thursday, Nov. 7 starting at 7 p.m., Elevate Church invites Santa Clarita residents to the Elevate Family Conference: “This is Us” to be held at their location on Main Street in Newhall.

The conference is set to focus on building families and family bonds, with speakers covering a range of topics, including moving forward in marriage after painful events have damaged the relationship.

“We really feel that, as a church, yes, we have an amazing Bible that talks a lot about relationships,” said Pastor Mauricio Ruiz. “We want to bring the practical tools and principles in order to maybe heal your marriage that you’re in right now.”

Ruiz explained that the conference is designed not just for married people, saying, “The reason we’re doing this conference (is), we want to be able to tackle not only marriage, but also there’s divorcees out there and also singles.”

“Maybe you’ve been divorced and you haven’t recovered,” the Santa Clarita church pastor continued. “We want to be able to speak to every single person that you can rewrite your future.”

Wednesday’s speaker is acclaimed relationship counselor Tina Konkin. As a counselor on reality television programs like “The Real Housewives of Orange County” and for celebrities such as Gene Simmons of the rock band KISS, Konkin is reported to have helped couples tough out difficult times in their marriages.

“She just brings a process of how to not only recover, but how to heal,” said Ruiz. “The reality is that you can’t forget the things you have not resolved. We have to resolve the hurt in order for us to move on.”

Ruiz went on to say that one of the things often holding couples back from a more joyful life is a lack of trust in the wake of hurtful memories. 

“When you stop trusting, I don’t think you can see good if it was standing in front of you,” Ruiz explained.

Nearly every marriage, Ruiz said, can be improved with dedication and hard work. Ruiz reflected on his commitment to working on his own family life, saying, “I’ve been married 25 years and we are still improving.”
