In a part two installation of Glynis Hodgekinson’s personal story of recovery and healing on “Teen Insight Hour” on KHTS, Frederik Schulin, CEO of Insight Treatment Center for teens and their families, continued the dialogue where they left off when Glynis was about 14.
Insight Treatment Center is a local Santa Clarita intensive outpatient treatment center for teens and their families battling mental health issues, addiction, and more. A place centered on healing in the whole family and the creation of a community focused on healing together, Insight Treatment and their team want to help guide families to reconciliation and connection.
Glynis Hodgekinson has been through many trials in her life, including her intense battle with drug addiction as a young teenager. Between the separation of her parents, exposure to drugs at a very young age, and a loving father who just didn’t know what to do, Glynis fell down the dark hole of addiction.
Now fully sober and the Director of Admissions of Divinity Recovery, Glynis’ story picks up in this episode when she is 14 years old. At this point in time she was fully addicted to drugs.
Due to her addiction, Glynis rapidly lost a lot of weight and was failing out of school. Her father, the sole parent in her household, believed the lies Glynis was telling, and she felt trapped and alone in her shame.

She didn’t know where to start and felt like no one would understand her or be able to help.
This feeling of isolation is not uncommon to teenagers, especially when dealing with personal or family struggles. Whether it is substance abuse, mental illness, or a hard change, people often feel alone and as if there was no one they could talk or relate to.
At Insight treatment, teens and parents get connected with a community to help support and encourage them, all while receiving counsel and advice on how to heal their families.
Unfortunately, Glynis did not link up with a recovery community and continued to battle alone. She eventually fell so far into her addiction that she ran away from home before getting arrested after buying drugs and receiving a DUI charge. She was sentenced to do time in a juvenile detention center which had extremely strict rules and required obedience.
She was released from the juvenile detention center to a halfway house where she continued to learn routine, structure, and boundaries, all while surrounded by other girls her age she could connect with and relate to.
Glynis reflects that before getting arrested, she recognized she would not be able to pull herself out of addiction, that she would need outside intervention, probably from law enforcement.
When she was arrested, she recalls being both upset and relieved, because she knew she would be forced into recovery.
Coming out of the system and back to her fathers’ house at almost 18 years old was a difficult transition, and Glynis wishes she had connected with a community close to her home that she could establish support and accountability with, people her own age as opposed to fully grown adults.
That is one of the great benefits of Insight treatment center for teens and their families. It is a community of other teens and parents who understand what their peers are going through, both for the parents and teens.
Having a community to support and encourage will make all the difference in recovery and reconciliation. It is possible, and happening right here in Santa Clarita.
