Dispelling Myths About In Home Hospice Care With Officials From Traditions Health Hospice

May Ronci and Jim Holloway from Traditions Health Hospice went on air on KHTS radio to address and dispel some of the myths surrounding home hospice care.

“I’d like to take some of the time on our show to dispel some of those misconceptions,” Ronci, a nurse practitioner for Traditions Health Hospice, said referencing in-home hospice care.

One issue discussed by the Ronci and Holloway, vice president of operations of operations in California for Traditions Health Hospice, was that many people are not aware that when Traditions Health Hospice uses the term “hospice care” they are also referencing other end-of-life issues that patients and their families face such as funeral arrangements and bereavement counseling.

Some families do not know about resources, such as advanced directives, that can help prepare someone to have their wishes honored during their end-of-life journey, officials from Traditions Health Hospice said. Officials also noted that advanced directives can be a wonderful tool for families so they know what their loved wants when they are undergoing end-of-life care.

“Try to prepare ahead of time,” Ronci said. “There’s so many amazing things you can do. The conversation alone is so powerful to have with your families. Advanced directives are out there for you to complete with or without the help of an attorney.”

Ronci went on to say that one goal of Traditions Health Hospice was to educate patients and their families about hospice care so they could make better decisions regarding hospice care and other end-of-life issues.

“There is help,” Holloway said. “The ideal here is to not just accept everything you have been told, but to ask questions and seek help. Look for those who can maybe give you better guidance of what you are dealing with.”

Something else that Traditions has heard from families is that they are unsure about how frequently an in-home hospice care provider might attend the patient.

According to Ronci, in most cases hospice care is not 24/7, but Traditions works hard to give families the skills and tools to ensure their loved one is comfortable even when a hospice care provider is not on site.

Many families are unsure about who pays for in home hospice care. Some patients believe that they will have to pay for care out of their own pockets. According to Holloway and Ronci, health insurance will pay for the treatment in most cases.
