Fighting Words, Why Black Belts Don’t Get In Fist Fights – Dr. Polucki Family Health Hour

Have you unfollowed any Facebook friends recently because they posted fighting words in their comments?

By Dr. Thomas Polucki

I know it’s easier than ever unfriend someone when they get passionate about something you don’t like.

But I believe that differences of opinion should not result in resorting to name-calling and fighting words, and losing friends and making enemies.

Because as it gets easier and more acceptable to dehumanize the enemy, it also gets harder to discriminate between friends and enemies. Frienemies?

Has social media made relationships so cheap and meaningless that friends have the relative value of toilet paper?

Maybe for some…

But I believe differences of opinion and the freedom to express them could make relationships stronger than ever.

Also I believe that feeling unheard, placated or manipulated could destroy any relationship.

That being said, I am grateful to live in America, where we can work our way up and determine our own value.

We get to choose our friends, opportunities and how we feel about things.

And even when people behave rudely, online or in real life, they usually are not trying to literally kill us.

But I also know from my years of martial arts training and practice that if someone were trying to kill me, I can respond faster, stronger and more appropriately if I stay loose.

And staying loose is contrary to my conditioned response of tensing up. So I always need more practice.

I practice staying loose every time I experience an internet troll, a bad driver, or any personal interaction with a power-hungry person.

Maybe someday soon I won’t just stay loose, but also respond with love.

Because that’s the kind of person I want to be. And I need more practice.

In the meantime, I have my martial arts creed to remind me:

“I pledge to work together with all classes of people without regard to politics, race or religion. I pledge to promote international goodwill and strive for world peace through the practice of martial arts.”

And if you know someone who is sick and tired of fighting chronic pain, please have them read about how some other people just like them feel about me.
