Mild traumatic brain injury or what most people call post concussion syndrome can be anything but mild. And new evidence suggests that it’s not all about a brain injury.
So, all in all, the label is highly misleading. Mild brain injury only means that it’s not immediately life-threatening. And many of the chronic persistent debilitating symptoms can come from the top of your neck instead of the brain. The top of the neck or upper cervical spine is easier to injure than the brain and often harder to diagnose and properly treat.
With or without a head injury, symptoms can include: anxiety, balance and coordination problems, brain fog, depression, headaches, insomnia, irritability, fatigue, fibromyalgia, referred pain to the neck, shoulder, arm, and hand, tinnitus, TMJ, and various neuropathies.

After reading the headline to this “article” first, I thought it was going to be about actual Traumatic Brain Injury,(as I was diagnosed with, after being injured @ work In 2000, along with several of the also mentioned issues, PLUS many other symptoms/disorders), THEN- soon as I saw the statement about how the damage done by TBI is centered not @ the brain, but @ the cervical spine area, & the “article” proceeded to turn into an advertisement for a Chiropractor, I have one thing to say: Doctor- PLEASE don’t make statements like this… You’re misleading people into thinking that chiropractic adjustments are the “be all, do all” treatments that cures the damage done by a blow to the head! I’m NOT disagreeing with the fact that there can be additional injury of the neck, & upper spine, that’s true. But, trust me- chiropractic treatment DOES NOT CURE THE SHEARING OF MICROSCOPIC NERVE, BLOOD VESSELS, & MUCH MORE, THAT OCCURS WHEN A BLOW TO THE HEAD TAKES PLACE!
I’ve battled for 21 years, with the aftermath of my work injury! Yes, I DID have some chiropractic adjustments done, & yes, they DID help somewhat, but there is SO MUCH MORE THAT I DEAL WITH, ON A DAILY BASIS, WHICH REQUIRES SPECIALIZED CARE THAT ONLY A CERTIFIED NEUROLOGIST, SURGEON, REHAB SPECIALIST, WHO’S BEEN TRAINED TO CARE FOR BRAIN INJURY SPECIFICALLY! How do I know this? Because my employer’s Worker’s Comp carrier was bankrupt & out of business, he didn’t reinsure himself with another Worker’s Comp Insurance Co, the State of California’s Dept. of Insurance didn’t properly put existing laws into play, to prevent an employer from operating w/o proper protection of it’s workers, which in turn, let my employer fire me, as he tried to cover his own butt, I was unemployed, WITH TBI, couldn’t work, lost my rented home, was homeless for most of 5 years, before my reinstated Worker’s Comp claim was finally settled, in October of 2007, with my being declared 100% permanently & totally disabled, after having to represent myself, since no attorney would take my case, since it turned out, that everyone but myself, knew that this particular Worker’s Comp carrier, Superior National, the largest W/C carrier in California, # that time, HAD gone bankrupt! So, I HAD to learn about TBI, & Work Comp law, in order for me to get the lifetime care I needed! Unfortunately, the State’s Insurance Guarantee Assoc, or CIGA, has illegally refused to provide me with on time bi-weekly cash benefits, OR any medical care, whatsoever, since about 2010, I fell @ my current rented in-law cottage, in 2017, due to losing my balance,(you mentioned this as an ongoing issue, yes, it’s true), resulting in ruptured quadriceps tendon(s) in one, possibly both knees, a fractured patella, fractured fibula, possible ruptured disc(s) and/or vertabrae in my upper neck, plus, another CONCUSSION! CIGA’s response? THEY DENIED ALL MEDICAL, leaving me now, bedbound, unable to stand or walk, my chin basically stuck in my chest, unable to moved my head backwards, even to drink from a cup! I was 45 yrs old, when I got hurt @ work,(BTW, my date of injury was… ON MY BIRTHDAY, 8/2/2000!), so the 1st 17 years I spent learning about TBI, Worker’s Comp Law, losing family, friends, my place to live, fighting for my benefits that I was owed, with next to no help! Now, after my 2017 fall, I’ve spent stuck on my queen size bed, unable to go outdoors, paying myself for ways to live on a daily basis- commode to use, shelving units, whatever needed, to have what I needed to use, in order to cook, change clothes, whatever, pay for caregiver help from my own pocket, & still to this day, I’m fighting to be able to have SOMETHING close to a life, all because no one cares enough to speak on my behalf, to MAKE the various local, State, or Federal agencies, provide me their promised care- whether it’s cash benefits, or medical/rehab care! The Insurance Industry, Big Business, Lobbyists, – the Political System itself, basically abuses people like myself, who have no voice in the decision making process, about what we want or need, in order to live our lives, the same as everyone else! Prejudice, Discrimination, Human Rights, are not just racial issues, or gender, nationality, on & on- Disability Discrimination is a GIGANTIC problem in this country! Becoming disabled mid-life, has been something I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy! And, it’s one of, if not THE main reason, of suicide in this country!
So, Doctor, please choose your words carefully, when you describe then benefits of your services! Don’t put false hopes in people’s minds, about chiropractic services. Please? Thank you…
