Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital held its 4th annual Cancer Awareness and Resource Expo, CARESCV, over the weekend.

With a new theme each year, the 2020 event was centered around cancer recovery and supporting cancer survivors. 

“Each year we try to choose a different topic that is relevant to the community, and each year it gets better and better,” said Mara Shay of Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital.

There are currently an estimated 17 million cancer survivors in the United States, and Shay noted that support for this population isn’t what it should be. 

“There tends to be a period of time that they kind of get forgotten,” Shay explained. “There’s an assumption that you’ve been through cancer treatment and you’ve survived, good for you. But now what? How do they transition back to what their new normal is? So that’s what we’re focusing on, is how can we continue to support these survivors in our community.” 

Four speakers were scheduled to appear at the event to talk about cancer recovery, including two local physicians that treat cancer patients, and a dietician and physical therapist from Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, according to Shay.

In addition, local resource organizations were present to provide information to attendees about cancer recovery, including information on cancer support groups offered by Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. 

“Cancer recovery, it’s really helping those people in our community that have experienced cancer, who have gone through treatment,” Shay said, “and helping them recover and get through their survivorship period of life.”
