Set for Sept. 8, the seminar will feature a live rattlesnake demonstration by Frank Hoffman of the Placerita Canyon Nature Center, in addition to presentations by Henry Mayo officials on hiking safety, how to treat a rattlesnake bite while on the way to the hospital, and what to expect in the emergency room.

“We’re trying to offer all kinds of class offerings, not just for health-related stuff but for other things that might be of interest to the community,” said William Bozlee, RN and program coordinator at the Henry Mayo Fitness and Health Center. “I know it’s a big hiking community.”

Bozlee is planning to talk about treatment “in the field” before coming to the emergency room, while a Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital ER doctor is set to speak on what to expect upon arrival.

“There’s a lot of myths and there’s a lot of facts,” Bozlee said, “so we’re going to go over all of that.”

Another Henry Mayo official is expected to give a presentation on the “do’s” and “don’ts” of hiking and how to be safe on the trail.

More than 40 people have already signed up to attend the seminar, which Bozlee noted will be offered twice a year.

“If it becomes more popular and people want to come, it may be more often,” he said.

The seminar is part of the number of free community classes available at the Henry Mayo Fitness and Health Center, which cover a variety of topics like high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, endurance nutrition for athletes and more.

“These classes are not just for hospital patients, they’re not (just) for gym members,” Bozlee said. “It’s for the whole community, so anybody and everybody.”
