‘Ride for a Cure’ Raises Over $14,000 For Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Breast Cancer Center

The Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Foundation announced Wednesday that the fifth annual “Ride For a Cure” fundraiser brought in over $14,000 for the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Center.

The Ride for a Cure event was held at the Santa Clarita Athletic Club on Oct. 18 during Breast Cancer Awareness month and raised $14,920 for the center, according to Henry Mayo officials.

Ride for a Cure was created by a Santa Clarita Valley spin instructor, Janet Cheveres, who wanted to raise funds and awareness during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Cheveres believes that early detection of breast cancer is critical for success and survival.

With that in mind, Ride for a Cure was born, and has been a successful event for the past five years, according to officials.

“According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every two minutes,” Cheveres said. “The numbers are scary and staggering. Taking action is more important to me than simply wearing pink in October.”

All proceeds from Ride for a Cure are set to be donated to the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Center to help provide early detection, treatment and support for patients.

“The support our Breast Center receives from our community is fantastic,” said Mara Shay, manager of the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Center. “We are so grateful for the dedication and generosity of Janet Cheveres and everyone who takes part every year in Ride for a Cure.”

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
