An orthodontist in Santa Clarita is weighing in on Halloween candy as many families in the community prepare for another season of festive events and trick-or-treating.

Dr. Megan LeCornu of Embrace Your Smile Orthodontics noted that the worst candy for oral health is anything sticky that easily becomes stuck to the teeth.

Some hard candies, like Jolly Ranchers, also made LeCornu’s list of worst candies for teeth, especially for anyone with braces.

“When you get to the end, you’re sucking on it, the tendency is to bite into it,” LeCornu explained. “When you bite into it, it sticks to your teeth. It can break off your braces. That’s why Jolly Ranchers tend to be on the ‘no no’ list when you get braces.”

At her house, LeCornu actually hands out full-sized candy bars to trick-or-treaters, which can be a better choice for teeth if a person wants to indulge in some Halloween candy.

“That tends to be very special,” LeCornu said. “But I also attach a toothbrush to it.”

At Embrace Your Smile Orthodontics, LeCornu believes that her team’s philosophy of creating a positive experience for their patients sets them apart from other orthodontists in Santa Clarita.

“When I was a kid, everyone was so traumatized by their orthodontic experience,” she said. “Nowadays, we actually have a lot more fun with it, so there’s a lot more clear options, there’s a lot of options that are a lot more comfortable for patients.”

LeCornu continued, “So we really embrace that and we try to make sure our patients understand how much easier it is, and for a lot of them, I think their experiences tend to be very positive.”
