A Santa Clarita grief counseling expert is talking about a common fear when it comes to addressing the deep pain of grief, and why many people put off their own healing as a result.

Sharon Brubaker and Sandi Atmore, Certified Grief Recovery Specialists, invited a guest to the latest “The Grief Recovery Hour” on KHTS to talk about why she put off starting the healing process after she was sexually abused.
“We all have this in common, of just the fear that if we start this journey of healing, if we step out of denial or if we actually start addressing the deep pain, that there’s no coming out of it,” said Shaela Druyon. “It’s just going to be this endless pit, and the only way out of it is to pull yourself up by the bootstraps and muscle through.”

Instead of addressing her grief as a result of her abuse, Druyon noted she spent her life avoiding anything that might “trigger” her emotions and unknowingly “sabotaging” her romantic relationships.
“I’ve dated, multiple times, great men. It never worked because I was terrified of marriage, I was terrified of the triggers that would inevitably happen, so I was sabotaging in every way possible without even knowing I was,” Druyon recalled.
Druyon eventually realized that she wouldn’t be able to achieve the things she wanted in life — such as having a healthy marriage and the freedom of being comfortable in her own skin — until she started the healing process.
“I was putting this journey off for so long because I was terrified … that I would never get out of it,” she said. “(Now) I do feel like, wow, there is hope, even though it’s hard. I don’t want to put this off anymore.”
Though she is still working through her grief, Druyon noted she has already seen the benefits of healing impact her life.
“Now that I’m embracing the healing, I do feel comfortable in my own skin, I do feel more confident, even speaking about this kind of topic,” Druyon said. “I’m still in it, but I do have faith now that as I work through this healing and the wounds do heal that I’m going to actually be able to have a healthy marriage.”
