Dr. Ginny Veloz from Santa Clarita Hearing Center is explaining how exposure to loud sounds can cause hearing loss over time.

Veloz noted that there are different “sound levels” ranging from soft to loud, and the louder the sound is, the more damaging it can be to hearing.
“Just to give you an idea, a motorcycle sound would come in at about 95 decibels,” Veloz said. “A rock concert, loud bars, maybe about 105 to 110 decibels; fireworks 150 to 170 decibels.”

When explaining hearing loss to her patients, Veloz compares the ears to a lawn.
“If you take a beautiful green lawn and you walk across to the other side of the yard, you’re trampling down some of those blades of grass,” she explained. “Then you go to bed, and in the morning, the grass has sort of regenerated itself.”
Veloz continued, “It’s really very much the same with the hearing. So if you just walk across the lawn a couple times, no big deal right? But if you leave a big, heavy object laying on the grass, all the blades have fallen down. You remove that big, heavy object, the blades of grass don’t come back up. They’ve died.”
While walking across the grass is similar to everyday noise, the heavy object can be compared to loud sounds, which leave the hairs inside the ears associated with hearing “trampled” and unable to regenerate, according to Veloz.
Hearing loss caused by sound exposure often doesn’t become apparent right away because other hairs in the ears can temporarily compensate for the damage, but eventually they become “tired,” Veloz continued.
“These things show up later; it doesn’t show up right away,” she said. “You’ve damaged some of those hairs. The ones around it have compensated, but now they’re getting tired out too, and it’s starting to show itself.”
