Santa Clarita Pilates Center Aims To Ease Scoliosis

Movement of Pilates in Santa Clarita is using Pilates treatments to help ease pain and slow or halt spine deformation caused by scoliosis.

The treatment is called “ScolioPilates,” and it uses a special set of pilates exercises to help alleviate the symptoms of scoliosis.

Scoliosis is a spine problem in which the spine curves in the wrong direction. Scoliosis is sometimes diagnosed in elementary and junior high schools, where routine testing is held by many schools. Other times, it is noticed during routine visits to pediatric doctors.

Scoliosis is usually very mild, and is surprisingly common. About 3 percent of adolescents may experience some form of scoliosis. Because scoliosis is often mild enough to not cause discomfort in adolescence, it is very easy for scoliosis to go undiagnosed unless individuals are actively screened for it.

Not all scoliosis remains mild, however. If scoliosis continues throughout adolescence and into adulthood, issues like bad posture, chronic back pain, and even difficulties breathing may arise. This is especially problematic in cases where scoliosis is particularly advanced.

Movement of Pilates’ “ScolioPilates” specialized exercises aim to both reduce scoliosis related pain and hopefully keep the spine from further deformation.

The “ScolioPilates” treatment involves using “traction, stretching, breathing exercises and pilates” to “help students combat the effects of Scoliosis and discover a stronger, more pain-free life,” according to Movement of Pilates officials.

As part of her dedication to building lifelong health for her students, Movement of Pilates Owner Melissa Lee started offering the “ScolioPilates” course in 2008 as after five years of study and preparation.

“My true passion is helping those that are maybe unable to find help in a traditional gym or general therapy setting due to injury, disability or medical condition,” Lee said. “And let me tell you, I love working with the curviest of spines!”

After several private sessions to assess the needs of each person’s individual body, group “ScolioPilates” sessions are also available.

“It’s never too early or late to combat the effects of Scoliosis,” Movement of Pilates officials said. “All you have to do is take that first step.”
