New 101 bed expansion to serve Santa Clarita, San Fernando valleys
[view:node_ad=5]Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has signed the Los Angeles City Council’s motion allowing Providence Holy CrossMedical Center in Mission Hills to build an additional 101-bed building to help meet health care needs of the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys.
The expansion proposal was unanimously approved by the Los Angeles City Planning Commission on July 26th.
“I want to thank Mayor Villaraigosa for his signature, allowing us to go ahead with this very important project to help improve health care access for the communities we serve,” said Providence Holy Cross Medical Center Administrator Kerry Carmody. “As 11 hospitals have closed in Los Angeles County in the last five years, the Mayor is very knowledgeable about the need for more hospital beds within our City.”
The expansion will include a neonatal intensive care unit and a new Woman’s Pavilion. The ICU and surgery units will also get upgrades and expansions.

Construction of the 101-bed South Addition will include a multitude of mitigation measures approved by the city to assure that the project has no adverse impacts on the environment. In addition, Providence Holy Cross will become the first “green” hospital in the City of Los Angeles by seeking LEED Certification for its new South Addition. LEED, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Grand Building Rating SystemTM, is the nationally accepted benchmark for environmentally-conscious design and operation of high performance buildings. Currently, only four hospitals in the United States are LEED Certified.
Construction of the South Addition is scheduled to start in early 2008, with the new patient care building opening in 2010.
“During the construction, as well as after the opening of our South Addition, we will continue to work with the Mission Hills Neighborhood Council and with others in our communities to ensure we build and maintain a place of healing that is safe for patients and safe for the environment,” Carmody said. “The residents of Mission Hills, Granada Hills, Arleta, Pacoima, Sylmar, Panorama City, Santa Clarita and all the surrounding neighborhoods deserve only the best in health care services.”
