KHTS Adopt A Pet: Mister, Castaic Animal Shelter (VIDEO)

When 8-year-old Mister arrived at the Castaic Animal Shelter as a stray with a softball-sized tooth abscess last month, he seemed to have lost all hope. But after an emergency surgery and lots of TLC, the chihuahua-spaniel mix has transformed into a happy and energetic pup.

“The first day I saw him, he still had the abscess … and he just sat there with this sad look on his face, his head was hanging,” said Shannon Wahrman, the animal control officer who fostered Mister during his recovery. “Since he’s had the surgery and he’s recovered, he’s jumping, running, playing — seems like the happiest kid.”KHTS Adopt a Pet - Mister

Mister had to have five to six teeth removed and needs to be on a special wet-food-only diet, but otherwise is expected to make a full recovery.

Another potentially tragic puzzle piece to Mister’s mysterious past is the fact that he has no toes on one of his back paws, which Wahrman noted doesn’t seem to bother him or slow him down in the slightest.

Despite his senior status, Wahrman called Mister “a young man at heart” who gets bursts of energy when he loves to race around and roll in the grass, and is then content to lay down for lots of pets or be held.

While Mister gets along with other small dogs and cats, his attention is usually focused on his humans.

“He loves to be right next to you and he follows you everywhere,” Wahrman said. “He’s 8, but he still has a long life to live, and he has such a great personality — 360 (degrees) from the day he came in to now. He’s just all smiles and happy, so I hope that he gets adopted soon.”

About the KHTS Adopt a Pet Series

Every Wednesday, the KHTS Adopt a Pet series features an adoptable animal from the Santa Clarita Valley in need of a home. The KHTS Features team travels to different rescues and shelters in Santa Clarita to meet the pets and tell their stories in hopes of helping them get adopted. First launched in August 2016, the series has partnered with seven local rescues, as well as the Castaic Animal Shelter, to showcase more than 40 dogs, cats and bunnies, and has seen 30 — and counting — adoptions so far. The series was created by Features Director Melissa Lampert, who has more than 10 years of experience in the animal rescue world and co-founded Madeline’s Angels Pet Sanctuary in Santa Clarita in 2016.
