L.A. Board Of Supervisors To Vote On Motion For Power To Remove Sheriff

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is set to vote on a motion Tuesday that would give the board the power to remove the L.A. County Sheriff.

The motion, introduced by Supervisors Holly J. Mitchell and Hilda L. Solis is aimed to “establish meaningful checks and balances,” stating that the check on the County Sheriff is “long overdue,” according to County documents.

“In the United States, no government official should have unchecked power,” states the motion. “Changes to the County Charter can ensure essential oversight of the Sheriff and protect the lives and liberties of County residents.”

The motion cites a historical lack of oversight and accountability when it comes to the County Sheriffs. The current Board has implemented a series of accountability measures to reform the Sheriff’s Department including the Citizens’ Commission on Jail Violence in 2011, the creation of the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) in 2012 and the Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission (COC) in 2014.

The Board also expanded the OIG’s authority to investigate LASD deputy gangs in 2019.

The motion also criticizes the actions of current Sheriff Alex Villanueva.

“The current Sheriff has been openly hostile to oversight and transparency and has tested the functionality of existing oversight structures by consistently resisting and obstructing these systems of checks and balances,” said the statement.

According to the Board, these actions include defying subpoenas and refusing to appear at COC meetings, refusing to cooperate with the OIG’s attempts at independent investigations, intimidating and harassing individuals who are tasked with oversight, failing to comply with federal court orders to provide information on deputy misconduct, and litigating with the County to rehire deputies who were fired due to misconduct.

Sheriff Villanueva responded to the Board motion and accusations on Monday in an official statement, saying that the motion would “allow corrupt board members to intimidate sheriffs from carrying out their official duties to investigate crime.”

Villanueva also stated that this motion will likely be ruled as unconstitutional by the courts.

This motion is set to be voted on tomorrow at the Board of Supervisors meeting. Supervisor Kathryn Barger, representative for the Santa Clarita Valley, has announced her opposition to the motion, saying that it would give the bird the “ability to remove the Sheriff and would take the power away from the people.”

Barger is encouraging residents to call into the meeting and voice their opposition.

  1. I believe it was only a few weeks ago that the VOTERS spoke and said they have faith in the Sheriff Villanueva he is one of the few that have publicly stood up to Gascon and the city managers on their soft on crime let the criminals and homeless rule the city. He is the only one that arrests and stops violent protestors and cleaned up the homeless camps in eco park and Venice boardwalk. the voters spoke and they want him re elected…. The sheriff is the only one that does the job the LAPD can not do…

The city Mangers and city counsel members need to go not Sheriff Villanueva

    • BS, that is not true. Villanueva did NOT win re-election; he was forced into a run-off with retired Long Beach Chief of Police Robert Luna. Villanueva as an incumbent, FAILED to receive a majority of the vote, just as he has FAILED to lead the Sheriff’s Dept. with transparency, integrity and accountability. His tenure has been plagued by a series of scandals, lies, misuse of power, excessive force and most notably a rise in crime throughout LA County. Villanueva is unfit to serve. He is a disgrace to the office, the badge and deserves to be removed from office.

  2. The Board of Supervisors should be removed. They do not have best interest of our community. Very scary times to remove an elected official, therefore making our votes worthless. We support Sheriff Villanueva. He’s actually helping our community!!!

  3. This must be stopped. He was elected. The Board of Supervisors should never have the power to remove our elected official. Our sheriff continues to fight for all of us law abiding citizens.

  4. Villanueva having the guts to denounce Gascon and the BOS outweighs any of his short comings. Criminals have little to no consequences for their crimes which is feeding an uptick in crime. BOS defunding the Police has lead to extreme LASD employee shortages. I am a resident of Los Angeles County, and I have several friends and family that work for LASD. I see and hear first hand the toll this has taken on them and our communities. Excessive forced overtime is affecting LASD employees health/ mental health. Money doesn’t buy happiness but a healthy work life balance does! Proper care and support, yields great law enforcement. The BOS political agenda is force feeding LASD with sickening garbage. You implode the LASD and all the garbage is going to spew like acid, raining on our communities further eroding and degrading them at a greater level than a few and occasional bad apple cops. Hey, BOS and other ignorant sheeple you clearly hate cops, so next time your in trouble … feel free to call and hire a crackhead!!! Wake up people don’t believe the four lying (majority) BOS. Only one BOS is pro community improvement and that is K B.

    • V. Is a Rogue in the Baca tradition. He thinks he is above the LAW & OVERSIGHT. He belongs in the cell next to Baca and Tanaka. The leadership of LASD is FUBAR. We need a Federal take over of the Brass. The fish started rotting in the head a very long time ago. It can’t heal itself. DO NOT VOTE FOR THIS GUY.

    • Villanueva is a thug that needs to get removed just like Gascon. Villanueva is protecting Police Gangsters and not doing his job. Instead of protecting LA County residents and or helping out the homeless in his jurisdiction. He was busy supposedly cleaning the streets of Venice Beach, which is not his jurisdiction. Last I checked. I believe he works for the LA County Sheriffs Dept., he receives a check from LA County and not the city of LA or LAPD. GASCON SHOULD GO AND SO SHOULD VILLANUEVA. THEY BOTH PROTECT CRIMINALS.

    • believe me. i have called the Sheriffs and they never show up. Enough is enough. Lets get rid of this Umpa Lumpa of Villanueva. The nerve of this idiot. the bosses call him in for a meeting and he decides not to show up, 5 times. if i did that to my boss, i would be fired….

  5. Villanueva has the unwavering support of the Banditos and Vikings. This is organized crime and terminal ethics cancer. Amputate the HEAD so the body can recover. Where are the Feds? Baca did not scare them away.

  6. Why do I get the feeling that the LA County board of supervisors has been infiltrated by far left members. The people put Villanueva in so they are defying the will of the people. How about a vote on who to keep on the board?
