The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is set to discuss sending a letter to the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services formally opposing potential Trump administration policy that detractors are saying would discount transgender people.

On Oct. 21, a draft memo obtained by The New York Times revealed that the Trump administration was considering proposing defining gender under Title IX with “a biological basis that is clear, grounded in science, objective and administrable.”
Title IX bans discrimination on the basis of sex in federally funded education programs and covers areas such as student housing, athletics and admissions, according to officials.
During the Obama administration, Title IX also came to be applied to individuals who identified as a different sex than what they were biologically born with.
But now, the Trump administration is looking to roll that back, according to the draft memo.
As a result, L.A. County Supervisors Sheila Kuehl and Janice Hahn have proposed a motion that would have all five county supervisors sign a letter to U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex M. Azar II expressing their opposition to any proposed gender policy change.
“If the federal government were to redefine gender in this way, the discrimination and violence that trans people already face, in numbers grossly disproportionate to their representation in the population, would not only be more socially acceptable, but would also be legally sanctioned,” reads the motion. “This is profoundly alarming and unacceptable.”
Kuehl and Hahn argue in the motion that gender identity and expression “cannot and should not be defined by or limited to mere biology.”
“They say that whoever defines the terms wins the argument which is why the current administration’s proposed plan to define gender in a way which strips trans individuals of their civil rights is especially disturbing and dangerous,” Hahn said in an email to her constituents. “To my trans friends, I recognize the way you define you gender and I respect your rights, your history, and your humanity. I’m proud to stand with you.”
The board is set to discuss the matter further on Tuesday.

To the County Board of Supervisors,
If certain people don’t know what gender they are there is a quick test. Kick them hard between the legs and ask them if their penis hurts or their vagina hurts. The answer tells you their gender. It’s easy. Why are you wasting time sending letters etc…?
The level of sophistication in this dried up oilpatch is bewildering.
I get to hear people who walk amongst us say incredibly crude things out loud and in public.
Your mom must be very proud..
