Supervisor Kathryn Barger Named Chair Of L.A. County Board Of Supervisors

Supervisor Kathryn Barger, who represents Santa Clarita as part of the Fifth District, became chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, officials said.

In her first speech as chair, Barger has outlined a set of major goals for her tenure, largely focused on programs and resources for county youth.

“I’m excited because this board has a commitment. There are other programs that each one of us has looked at in terms of a priority. Now let’s bring it together and take it to the next step,” Barger said.

Barger pointed to several points in particular, such as unifying county programs that are already in place and streamlining processes for the Department of Child and Family Services.

“My term as chair will focus on our youth — our greatest hope for future success. Through what I’m calling ‘Our County, Our Children, Our Commitment,’ we will renew our dedication to the wellbeing of youth as the forefront of our mission to serve LA County,” said Barger in a tweet on Tuesday.

Among the other agenda items for Barger’s first meeting as board chair, the supervisors observed a moment of silence and prayer of remembrance in memory of the 1,460 Los Angeles County residents who passed away in 2016 with their identities still unknown or remains unclaimed who are set to be buried in the County Cemetery on December 4.

“Colleagues, we have a great deal to do, and I am confident that we will get it done,” said Barger.
