Smith starts her term after defeating Dante Acosta in a long-fought election for the 38th Assembly District.

“I’m ready to get to work,” said Smith. “I’m here to serve my constituents in this community is really what’s significant and knowing how well we do things in this community I think is going to drive some good decisions in Sacramento.”

The local representative was sworn in by California Attorney General Xavier Becerra just after 12:30 p.m. Monday on the Capitol floor.

Committee selection is set to take place within the coming week, with Smith applying for the Education Committee, Public Safety Committee as well as the Jobs, Economic Development and Economy Committee.

Before taking office, Smith spoke to stakeholders to determine the legislative properties of the community.

“There’s already some stakeholder meetings set up,” said Smith in a previous interview before taking office. “I’ll be meeting with the chamber and some economic development folks and making sure that we have a staff ready to go and an office set up.”

The Assemblymember sat down with KHTS live on the air to reflect on the election and look forward to the upcoming term in the Capitol.

“It was a shocking moment,” said Smith discussing the initial reaction to being elected. “I actually had a really nice and very touching conversation with outgoing Assembly member Dante Acosta.”

The newly-elected official was previously president of the Newhall School District Board and plans on taking that experience to Sacramento.

Smith’s victory was one of several for Democrats, giving the political party a “supermajority” in the Assembly, meaning two-thirds of the seats.

A supermajority enables the Democratic Party to pass any legislation they deem appropriate, including placing constitutional amendments on the ballot without the approval of the Republican minority.

  1. ‘O yea, she will pass taxes. That ain’t bad cause I’ll get to freeload a little longer.

  2. I find it curious why this article — about a swearing-in ceremony — would include this sentence:

“A supermajority enables the Democratic Party to pass tax increases and place constitutional amendments on the ballot without approval of the Republican minority.”

Why focus on tax increases specifically? A supermajority allows the party in power to pass any laws without the support of the minority. Seems like it was included to scare people into thinking Smith with vote to raise their taxes. #republicanmediaorg

  3. Santa Clarita no longer has a voice in Sacramento….

    • Do you mean it no longer has your voice? So now because it isn’t your voice it isn’t Santa Clarita? Perhaps you will find that Christy’s knowledge will empower your voice in meaningful ways…. and give other people an opportunity to be heard in Santa Clarita who have been told their voices didn’t matter for all these years. Maybe we can all work together in a united way. Christy is up for it I feel certain.

  4. There You Go! Pass Taxes without any Hindrance. Gas Tax increases at any time the Governor wants it without Any Voter Approval! We are going to be Taxed to the Max as the CA Govt will need more Monies to Pay for all the Programs that G. Newsom promised to Pay For.

  5. Yep the demacrats sucked in the the youngsters for voting on stuff they new nothing about ,thanks to millions spent on advertising/ media badmouthing our President and every American proud of our American values.
