Republican Congressional candidate Angela Underwood-Jacobs joined KHTS After-Hours News Director Michael Brown for an on-air interview Monday to discuss her position on topics such as healthcare and public transit.
Underwood-Jacobs is a wife, mother of two, banker, member of the Lancaster City Council, and now a Congressional candidate.
Having been a resident of California’s 25th Congressional district, she said she believes in repaying those who have helped her along her path.
“I always want to give back, because I remember somebody giving me that shot,” Underwood-Jacobs said. “I want to make sure I give back whatever I can.”
Underwood-Jacobs also noted she believes in keeping the status quo for certain local initiatives, like transport solutions.
“What we need to continue to do is take a very collaborative approach with local government, state government and the county to make sure we are improving the 5 and 14 corridors,” Underwood-Jacobs said when questioned about freeway traffic. “If we are able to improve it, that means commuters are not spending as much (time) on the freeways… That in turn gives them time back with their families, which improves all-over quality of life.”
Underwood-Jacobs said one motive for her decision to run is that the incumbent, Congresswoman Katie Hill, represents a small segment of the district and Underwood-Jacobs believes she would be “more inclusive.”
“Given my experience being on the front line and understanding and seeing what people go through on a daily basis, I believe that I am the right person for that job,” Underwood-Jacobs added. “We want someone to lead with integrity, ethics… I lead with my heart and my mind.”
When asked about healthcare, Jacobs said she argues for a system without government involvement.
“I think the government should stay out of healthcare, and I think that we need to take a look at prices for medications and making sure that we are keeping those types of things transparent,” Underwood-Jacobs said. “For instance, going from medications that are generic versus one that’s brand, pulling out the middle-man when it comes to pricing, we need to do that too. As soon as we have someone in the middle, prices automatically go up.”
