Congresswoman Katie Hill, D-Agua Dulce, has introduced the Cost Assistance Made Possible for Undergraduate Students (CAMPUS) Act in an effort to help support low-income college students, officials said.
The CAMPUS Act would award students with emergency funds in the event of unexpected financial burdens like a sudden illness, loss of employment or transportation emergencies.
The bill was introduced in an effort to help ensure that a lack of funds in an emergency does not “hold students back from pursuing or completing their degrees,” according to Hill’s office.
“As a millennial in Congress who has been personally affected by the astronomical costs of higher education, I’m proud to introduce the CAMPUS Act with Representative Morelle, which will provide a safety net for low-income students who face emergency expenses that would otherwise force them to drop out,” Hill said. “I look forward to continue finding as many avenues as possible to make education accessible for all young people.”
The bill would reportedly support students whose ability to stay in higher education is threatened.
However, officials say that only schools participating in the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG) program would benefit from the CAMPUS Act.
Through the CAMPUS Act, grants would also be given to students going through loss of employment, housing or food insecurity and medical conditions. Students would be supported by up to $750. An eligible student would not be able to receive more than $2,000 from one institution, according to officials.
