Congresswoman Katie Hill To Join Freshmen Working Group On Addiction

Congresswoman Katie Hill, D-Santa Clarita, announced Thursday she will be joining the Freshmen Working Group on Addiction, a bipartisan effort to promote policies to end the nation’s addiction crisis, officials said.

Started by Rep. David Trone of Maryland, the group is composed of 36 members of the newly-elected freshman class with representatives from across the country.

The purpose of the group is to come together to understand the extent of the impacts of addiction and to jointly promote policies to reduce overdoses and deaths, according to Hill’s office.

“I’ve been open about the effects of addiction on my family and my community. We aren’t alone in that fight,” said Hill. “Last year over 70,000 people died from drug overdoses alone, and Americans are now more likely to die from an opioid overdose than from a car crash. We must treat addiction like the public health crisis it is and deliver real results for our communities. I’m excited to join this bipartisan effort because addiction doesn’t happen along party lines, and neither can our solutions.”

As part of the working group, members will meet on a regular basis to hear from experts and stakeholders, make site visits to institutions focusing on research and treatment, and promote legislation in order to tackle the epidemic.

A Santa Clarita addiction expert from The Way Out Recovery Rehab Santa Clarita applauded the local representation on the committee, which could bring the valley’s addiction issues to the national stage.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to have a more personalized approach to addiction for our area,” said Bob Sharits, program director at The Way Out Recovery SCV.

Hill knows the local issues of addiction through her past experience working with People Assisting The Homeless (PATH), a nonprofit organization based in Los Angeles County, said Sharits.

“Mental health and addiction are two big factors that lead to homelessness,” said Sharits. “This experience will give her a unique view on the issue.”

Hill is joining the body comprised of freshman Congress members from across the country, including three other representatives from California.

“Over a third of the freshman class has joined this bipartisan group that understands the importance of coming together to fight the addiction problem in our country,” said Congressman David Trone, the group’s founder. “With 192 deaths every day, my colleagues and I are ready to fight back. I’m looking forward to working with Katie to bring fresh eyes and new ideas to take action against this epidemic.”

  1. If you want the addiction to stop them close the borders so most of the drugs and dealers are stopped.
