Pak, who previously had thrown his hat into the ring for the 38th Assembly District, and raised more than $100,000, is now running for the Board of Equalization, according to state filings.

A filing with the Secretary of the State for “PAK FOR BOARD OF EQUALIZATION 2018,” ID no. 1395727 is listed as active. A person reached at the number listed for the filing confirmed Pak was no longer running for the Assembly seat, and seeking a term on the state’s Board of Equalization.

His committee, “PAK FOR ASSEMBLY 2018,” raised $140,000 s of the reporting period ending June 31.

Jerome E. Horton currently holds the 3rd District Board of Equalization seat, which Pak is now seeking.

The other current known challenger for Acosta’s seat is Newhall School District board member Christy Smith, who was Acosta’s opponent in last November’s election.

The five-member California State Board of Equalization (BOE) is a publicly elected tax board that serves a significant role in the assessment and administration of property taxes, according to the board’s website.

Smith, who’s also a Democrat, said Pak notified her of his decision near the end of last month, with both candidates sharing an intent to “flip the district,” which has been historically held by the Republican Party.

“We met for breakfast on September 29 and he let me know he planned to pursue a different seat,” Smith said. “We are both committed to flipping the 38th and 25th and I wish him nothing but the best in his race for BOE.”
Acosta won election in November 2016 by a margin of 52.9 to 47.1.
