Knight Faces Vocal Crowd At Santa Clarita Town Hall

Congressman Steve Knight, R-Palmdale, was greeted by a rowdy crowd of about 200 residents Thursday at Canyon High School during a town hall in Santa Clarita.

Knight faced a mixed crowd of boos and cheers, discussing internet privacy, veterans, education, President Trump’s budget and health care — the most heated topic of the afternoon.

“I think it’s very divisive going both ways,” said Knight. “I’d like to get back to working on the people’s business.”

The boisterous constituents of the 25th Congressional District nearly filled the high school auditorium to voice their opinions, on occasion shouting over each other and Knight.

Town hall attendees raise “agree” placards in support of a resident asking a question.

One of the residents in attendance was concerned if her son, a special education student, would remain covered under the new health care bill.

“Your son would continue to be on Medicaid,” said Knight. “On the AHCA, no one will be kicked off Medicaid.”

The Congressman voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) also known as Obamacare last month, in favor of the Republican-backed American Health Care Act (AHCA).

One of the attendees said “You represent the 25th District of California, not the 1st District of Wisconsin,” in reference to Paul Ryan who championed the AHCA.

Knight identified three major goals to accomplish in his current term in the town hall: supporting the aeronautics industry, small businesses and veterans.

“Bringing in jobs, is something we can agree is the best thing government can do,” said Knight.

Congressman Knight also received questions about internet privacy, after lawmakers overturned Obama-era protections for information online.

“Google goes and sells your information, all search engines do,” said Knight. “We said we want a clarification across the board.”

A member of the crowd noted that services like Google and Yahoo are optional, giving internet service providers (ISPs) access to that level of personal information is different, he said.

Constituents of the 25th District wait to enter Canyon High School’s auditorium.

The event Thursday afternoon is Knight’s first town hall in Santa Clarita — the Congressman has previously held meetings Palmdale and Simi Valley.

The legislator received pressure from protestors following the November general election that lead to the first town hall meeting in the 25th District on March 4 in Palmdale.

The Santa Clarita town hall came to an end with a “boom” in Knight’s words, with a comment from a Valencia resident of 20 years about money in politics.

“We are in a dire time right now,” said Carole Lutness. “Money rules Washington — we need you more than ever to vote for the people and not corporations.”
