UPDATE: Garcia Takes Narrow Lead In Tight Congressional Race

The race between Congressman Mike Garcia, R-Santa Clarita, and Assemblywoman Christy Smith, D-Santa Clarita, has gotten even more tight, with both candidates earning an estimated 50 percent of the votes tallied so far.

UPDATE (7 p.m.): Mike Garcia took a narrow lead Thursday night as ballots continue to be counted. Garcia holds 143,059 votes and Smith holds 142,794 votes, with Garcia leading by 265 votes.

Original Post: As of 4:40 p.m. Thursday, the race for California’s 25th Congressional District (CA-25) became even closer than before, with Smith only leading Garcia by 256 votes.

Thursday’s update shows Garcia gaining ground in the vote count, closing the gap by nearly 1,500 votes when compared to the lead that Smith had as of Wednesday afternoon.

When the first vote counts were reported at around 8:20 p.m. Tuesday, Smith held a larger lead over Garcia, as the first round of reporting came from Democratic-leaning vote-by-mail ballots.

However, as the voting center ballots have slowly continued to be reported, Garcia has gradually closed that gap. This has prompted California state officials to deem the race a “close contest.”

The results as of Thursday afternoon can be viewed below.

Mike Garcia – R – Incumbent: 138,003 — 50.0%
Christy Smith – D: 138,259 — 50.0%

Neither campaign has officially declared victory or conceded as of Thursday afternoon.

  1. Demand a recount. The mail in ballots are guaranteed to have many many rejectioms

  2. Stop the counting! Christy will try to steal the election with illegal votes!!!

  3. Hang in there Christy, Democrats always come up with enough votes to win after election day.

  4. Local Dems were dispatched to battleground states to stuff those ballots. I’m sure they’ll send some back to handle this race.

  5. Ah, didn’t have to scroll very far to see an unoriginal, sexist comment from an angry trump supporter.

  6. If Garcia wins it’s because of how nasty and untruthful he is. Too bad so many residents of SCV buy into this.
