Schiavo, Wilk Deliver Major Victory For Santa Clarita On CEMEX Mine Project

Tuesday, Assemblymember Pilar Schiavo announced that Assembly Bill 163, aimed at Community Water Protection (AB163), in which Senator Scott Wilk was a Principal Co-Author, helped advance a critical priority for the Santa Clarita Valley: allowing for public comment on the more than 30-year-old CEMEX mine project.

The pressure of the bill compelled the State Water Board to take the action outlined in the bill, which will now give the public a chance to share their position on the community impact of the CEMEX mine, something the community of Santa Clarita has been demanding for years, according to Schiavo’s office.

“A lot has changed in 30 years, and this legislation is about transparency, public engagement, and ensuring that our community has a voice in such an important resource — water,” Schiavo said.

AB 1631 would have required the State Water Board to reissue notices of applications for all water appropriations if they are pending approval for more than 30 years, allowing protest and public comment on decades-old projects.

“It was fantastic to see the Governor reaffirm that the State Water Board will re-notice CEMEX’s application by the end of the year. Finally after 30 years, this is a major victory for the Santa Clarita Valley,” Wilk said. “The proposed mega-mine is a threat to our water supply, and would wreak havoc on our roads and air quality. The Governor’s message ensures residents will get the opportunity they deserve to publicly voice their concerns against this disastrous project. It has been a pleasure to work alongside Assemblywoman Schiavo this year to get this done for our shared community.”

While Governor Newsom announced he would not sign AB 1631 into law, he reaffirmed that the State Water Board would reissue a notice of application for water appropriation, reopening public comment on this controversial project, according to Schiavo’s office.

“I know the Governor shares our community’s concerns about the ability to have our voices heard on a decades-old project,” Schiavo said. “His message acknowledging that what this bill sought to do is in motion. I am grateful the persistence of our community and bipartisan effort with my colleague, Senator Wilk, will deliver for the people of Santa Clarita.”

  1. So how would a member of the public comment on the proposed mine?

  2. The entire CEMEX debacle is based on false and mis-leading information that ALL of the legislators know is false but yet none of them made ANY effort to discover the truth. What a shame and what an embarassing waste of resources.

    • I agree. Sand and gravel are the fundamental elements of road and building construction. SCV will always need sand and gravel. It has to come from somewhere. Making it come from farther away is expensive, will dramtically increase truck traffic to move it here.
NIMBY whining does not make it evil.
Wilk and Shciavo couldn’t deliver feces if their political show depended on it.

About Carl Goldman

Carl Goldman, along with his wife, Jeri repurchased KHTS AM-1220, Santa Clarita’s hometown station on October 24, 2003. They owned it from 1990-1998, and then sold it to Clear Channel Communication in 1998, buying it back from Clear Channel in 2003. Since then, they have rebuilt KHTS as a critical voice of the Valley. In 2015 the radio station moved to its new headquarters on Main Street in Old Town Newhall, in the original Newhall Hardware building. In 2018 an FM was added, 98.1, with its signal being simulcast with AM-1220. In January 2020, Carl and Jeri cruised on the Diamond Princess. Carl was one of the first Americans to come down with Covid-19. Months earlier he was impacted by Guillain Barre Syndrome as a result of a Shingles vaccine in September 2019. He is still in recovery from the vaccine.
