Senator Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, toured The Master’s University on Friday, speaking with students before chapel and with a government class on campus.

He talked to students in the government class about how he got to his state Senate seat, sharing a story about how, at age 13, he knew during a family vacation where he was supposed to be.
He didn’t want to go on vacation because of his summer baseball league, but was given little choice. However, during a fateful visit to Sacramento that summer, he saw the view of the state Senate floor from up above.
“I knew that’s where I wanted to be,” Wilk said.
He also enjoyed spreading his passion for the political process with students, he said, through engagement like the lengthy question-and-answer session at TMU. Students asked how he balanced religion and politics, and politics and family, as well as some of the challenges of being a legislator.
“You never know when you’re planting a seed,” Wilk said, mentioning how he enjoys talking with constituents. He always tries to be available for school visits for those reasons, he added.
He shared about how he began as an intern, then a field representative, and then spent about five years as a district director, before he eventually garnered an appointment for a seat on the College of the Canyons governing board.
In 2012, he was elected to the Assembly seat previously held by a termed out Cameron Smyth, then running to fill the seat he currently holds, the 21st District seat in the state Senate previously held by Sharon Runner, who died in July 2016.
He also shared his close relationship with the Runners, Sharon and George, who’s currently on the Board of Equalization, and how they were a big impact on his career.
“George Runner was (as a legislator) top notch,” Wilk said, “for being able to remain faithful, a conservative and effective (in Sacramento).”
